Why jesus fasted 40 days and nights

It might be tempting to explain away the whole episode. He can multiply fish and loaves of bread. Fasting means not eating. We can assume that Jesus drank water because, without a miracle, no one could survive without water for forty days and nights. He just needs enough energy stored as fat on his body. There are 3, calories in a pound of fat. So, thirty pounds of extra fat would be enough — not all that much for a well-fed man — as long as his body was able to access the fat stores. The angels do arrive to minister to Jesus, but only after his long fast and triple-testing from Satan.

But we miss part of what God intends for us if fasting is not a central part of our life. Because He took it for granted that His followers would do so. He tells them that God cares about what we do, and also why we do it. You see? Jesus assumed that His followers would give alms, pray and fast. He focused on explaining how best to do all three. However, during this time of fasting, He was able to experience the weakness of the flesh and become one of us.

We should be thankful to Him for all His sacrifices as His fasting was only one of His sacrifices as our Savior. We are reminded of this in Romans ,. You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.

Based on Scripture, Satan tempted Him many times. First, Satan tempted Jesus to turn stones to loaves of bread to feed His hunger. Second, Satan tempted Jesus to throw Himself down so that the angels would come to help, proving He was truly the Son of God.

But Jesus was able to conquer all these temptations with simple, yet powerful rebuttals. First, He said that man shall not live by bread alone. Second, He said not to put the Lord God to test. The Bible also says that during the 40 days and nights while Jesus was fasting there were wild beasts with Him. It also mentions that during his temptations angels were ministering to Him.

And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him. Exodus And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights. Exodus And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water.

And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. Deuteronomy ,18,25 When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water: ….

Matthew Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered. Mark And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry:. John Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.
