Duke Gardens. The hub of the university is West Campus, with richly detailed Gothic architecture, stonework and landscaped grounds designed by African American architect Julian Abele during the earlier half of the 20th century.
NCCU was founded by Dr. James E. In , it became the first state-supported liberal arts college for African Americans in the country, and in it joined the University of North Carolina System. The school carries that proud heritage today, working to train socially responsible leaders in a diverse society. Working for the Head of College, student enrichment and support staff provide programmes of proactive challenge and encouragement to students to achieve their best in any and all domains of their student experience, and also oversee the delivery of the Durham Inspired Award within the context of their college.
This often includes organising and promoting to students a wide range of opportunities offered by the College's alumni. College staff furthermore set the tone for the culture of their communities, and guide and mentor the elected student leaders in their Common Rooms. Each College's members also belong to self-organised and self-governing communities within the college.
The Common Rooms are places for both development and support, as well as avenues for socialisation, academic curiosity, and responsible citizenship.
