How do democrats feel about abortion

A ruling is expected next year, before the November elections. Unity on abortion is a relatively recent development for the party. After successive defeats in rural America, and defections among white working class voters, Democrats won majorities in Congress with a coalition of urban and suburban college-educated voters who tend to be more socially liberal.

A solid majority say the procedure should remain legal with some restrictions. A recent Monmouth University poll found that a majority of Americans want abortion to be legal in all or some circumstances. More than six in 10 said they did not want the court to revisit Roe.

Among Americans with a college degree, support for keeping abortion mostly legal was even higher. They also made the supreme court a political priority, culminating in a conservative majority, led by three appointees of Donald Trump.

But, she said, that could change as more Americans come to terms with the reality that abortion is now effectively outlawed in a state like Texas. Democrats say fear of losing Roe is motivating voters beyond their liberal base.

This follows with Morning Consult polling showing that issues surrounding reproductive freedom like abortion and birth control are increasingly salient for Democratic voters as well as independent women and 18 to 29 year-olds.

While these Democrats have been willing to go further in embracing abortion rights than virtually any past presidential candidates, they also went to extreme lengths to talk around the actual issue: when and under what circumstances a woman should be allowed to terminate her pregnancy in the United States.

Former Vice President Joe Biden is the best evidence of how far to the left Democrats have moved on the abortion issue. He consistently voted for the Hyde Amendment, which prevents the federal government from paying for most abortions through its public programs. After facing significant criticism on the campaign trail this year, however, Biden reversed his position , saying he would work to repeal the Hyde Amendment as president.

On the debate stage last night, he reaffirmed his new stance, calling for the legislative codification of the principles laid out in Roe.
